🔵 Japan Weighs Trading Card Regulation as Market Hits $2.1 Billion

A group inside Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has begun studying whether the trading card market needs clearer rules, saying cards no longer behave like ordinary consumer products. Japan’s domestic trading card market grew 90% in the four years to fiscal 2025, reaching ¥338 billion, roughly $2.1 billion. The concerns are counterfeits, scalping, untraceable ownership, and suspected money laundering, with rare cards now moving like watches, sneakers, and art.

Seiji Kihara, the LDP lawmaker chairing the caucus, has said the group wants to support Japan-originated IP without over-regulating, pointing to how heavy crypto rules pushed parts of that industry offshore. The caucus is expected to hear from manufacturers and industry participants before drafting policy recommendations. The report also cites a string of card shop burglaries in California and Australia as evidence of how attractive small, high-value cards have become to thieves.

🔵 Japan’s Pokémon Card Stores to Require Facial Recognition for Entry

The Pokémon Company will begin using facial recognition to enforce entry and purchase limits at Japan’s official Pokémon Card Store locations, the smaller TCG-focused shops that operate separately from Pokémon Centers. Customers must consent to the scan to receive a numbered entry ticket, and the system verifies one ticket per person per day. Anyone caught trying to pull a second ticket or re-enter is denied, and staff may question groups suspected of working around the limits.

Preschoolers are exempt and may only enter with an adult. The stores will collect facial image data and visit counts, which the company says will be stored securely for a set period under its privacy policy. It is unclear whether the system will expand to Pokémon Centers, though select Pokémon Center TCG purchases already require a government-issued photo ID starting in August.

🔵 Eeveelutions TCG Figurine Set Teased for China

Pokémon China has teased its next set of TCG figures, this time featuring Eevee and its evolutions. No release date or additional details have been announced.

The first Chinese set featured cards from 151 and released in November 2025, followed by a Water Pokémon set in April 2026. Both eventually made their way to Japan. Each box included one random figure emulating a card’s artwork, a reverse holo of that card, a stand with a card holder, and two 5-card booster packs, with a 1 in 143 chance of an Illustration Rare figure. Whether the Eevee set includes an Illustration Rare figure has not been confirmed.

This set is known for a factory misprint where Chesnaught BREAK cards were printed with completely upside-down backs.

🔵 Japanese XY Evolutions 20th Anniversary CP6 Booster Box Sells for $10.5k

CP6 is the Japanese 20th Anniversary set that served as the source material for English Evolutions. It reprinted Base Set artwork in Japanese and features unique box art re-using the art of the 1996 Japanese Base Set box art with modern Pokemon evolutions.

Shining Mew was distributed in 2001 as a sealed insert inside CoroCoro Comics, and this sale covers the sealed envelope on its own rather than the full magazine. Most prior comps include the magazine, though that particular difference in packaging has historically had little effect on price.

Alto Mare’s Latias (011) and Latios (012) were Japanese theater-limited VS-style promos tied to the 2002 movie run, never released in packs. This sale covers both cards graded PSA 10 together as a set. Most sets that surface pair a PSA 10 with a PSA 9.
